MOUNT

ST BENEDICT

Within the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional area there is a place in the quiet secluded hills of the Northern Range where many people go to seek blessings, to pray or to simply spend a quiet moment by themselves.
This place is called Mount St. Benedict. It is the home of the Benedictine Monks who established themselves here in 1912 when three monks – led by Abbot Dom Mayeul de Caigny– from the Benedictine Monastery of San Sebastien in Bahia, Brazil found their way into the foothills of Trinidad after feeling religious prosecution. Dom Mayeul de Caigny subsequently wrote to the Archbishop of Port of Spain – at that time John Dawling – who gave his permission to set up the monastery.
By 1929 the Benedictine Monks were in charge of the parish of San Fernando and founded St. Benedict’s College which today is known as Presentation College, San Fernando. Between the years 1812 to date the Benedictine Monks, through determination and tenacity, have transformed the Mt. St. Benedict area into a traveler’s dream. Notwithstanding their commitment to the spiritual life, the monks have, over the years, also engaged themselves in a number of projects intended to foster industry and self-sufficiency, and at the same time contribute to the development of the larger community. These projects include an apiary which up to the 1990’s, produced enough honey to supply both the export and local markets.
The St. Bede’s Industrial School is home and family to many young people who in many circumstances do not meet the requirement for enrollment into the national technical schools. Trades learnt at this school include; woodwork, machine shop, plumbing, welding and bookbinding. The Abbey school has, over the years, produced some of the top administrators and sportsmen in Trinidad.
Rehabilitation facilities are available for persons with drug addiction problems; an expansive library is accessible to those in search of learning, and there is a guest house for persons who seek accommodation in a more contemplative environment. Visitors can also attend Daily Mass and meditation sessions.

Paria Bay is a secluded, undeveloped beach located on the north coast of Trinidad and Tobago. It can be accessed by hiking a scenic trail through the coastal forest, which takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The beach is known for its stunning natural beauty, with clear turquoise waters and a long stretch of white sand and its silky smooth sand provides ideal conditions for the leatherback turtles to nest.

During the nesting season which ranges between March to July they come ashore nightly. If you’re up for an adventurous hike, make your way to the Paria Waterfall. The trail to the falls begins near Paria Bay and takes you through lush rainforest, past a river, and up and down hills. At the waterfall, you can take a refreshing dip in the cool water and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

The Caura Valley is an ideal place for a holiday especially with children. Access to this area can be obtained via the Caura Royal road off the Eastern Main Road. This area has grown into a valley which is now part of a ward which was created by Lord Harris around 1849 when he divided the island into counties. Caura is the most popular location in Trinidad for a river lime with the most popular spots being at the abandoned pump house and are called Pool Number 1 and Pool Number 2.

A journey through this area is a windy one, but the access road is excellent and along the way anyone can stop for a picnic or swim in the clear water which flows from the Caura River. The area was once a settlement inhabited by the Arawak Indians but readily changed just after the Cedula of Population in 1783 which allowed into Trinidad a great number of French settlers. The plantation which comprised of both cocoa and coffee estates enabled the French and Spanish to practice their culture side by side, which was to the benefit of the area and the wider public. The result of this led to the reopening up of Caura with all the attending progress.

The Caura Valley is a very scenic one and it is a delight to watch the forested areas which enhance the cool atmosphere of this region. At one of the further picnic spots up the river there is a customary cook-out spots which gives off a feeling of being close to nature – especially when the meal is accompanied by the loud but melodious chirping of the birds in the trees.

The authorities have assisted a great deal however by turning the area into a beautiful park area and it is hoped that the area will be maintained for the enjoyment of all. If the visitor to this area is very adventurous however he could go further up to the valley of the second highest peak of the Northern Range: “El Tucuche”.

Located to the north of Arouca on the southern slopes of the northern range, the Lopinot Historical Complex historic is place of beauty and is an experience of a lifetime. Lopinot was founded by Charles Joseph Count D’ Lopinot around 1806, who is a Frenchman, which was appointed Brigadier-General of the Trinidad Militia by Governor Thomas Hislop in 1805.

The journey to this illustrious spot is a winding one, with the Arouca River running along-side the main road and rainforest roads bordered by towering bamboo arches and steep mountain precipices is the home to various species of birds. What makes the trip so pleasing to the eye, are the agricultural estates, big and small, which line the route. In earlier years the cocoa estates predominated, but over the years it is apparent that these have been reduced… a quick glance at the people one observes along the way today is a reflection of the mixtures of Africans, Caribs, Spanish and East Indian who predominated this area many years ago. The Lopinot Historical Complex and its surrounding area is a must see for nature seekers.

Speaking about cocoa, the rich culture of the Spanish speaking labourers who were hired to work on the many fields yielded such cultural maestros as “Papa Ghun”, one of the early “Paranderoes” who are still legends in the world of Parang music in Trinidad.

The Maracas Waterfall is located in the beautiful Valley of Maracas, St. Joseph. One of the most breathtaking tourist attraction in the Tunapuna/Piarco region. This waterfall is ideal for hikers, nature lovers and anyone wishing to enjoy a day outdoors.

It is T&T’s highest waterfall with an altitude of 298 feet (91.5 meters).. The source of the fall comes from the southern foothills of Mt. El Tucuche the second highest peak in Trinidad. The view as you enter the waterfall situated in secluded valley is truly breath taking, as it is surrounded but towering cliffs laden with green vegetation, a natural wonder. Adding to the scenery are the giant boulders that line the base of the falls. Unlike most waterfalls, there is no pool at the base due to its high altitude.

The best time of the year to visit this waterfall will be during the rainy season where the water source is greater and you can see the true magnificence of the water spray.

Caution: The waterfalls can become dangerous especially during heavy rainfall.
